BE GOOD TO YOURSELF
Topic: Good Advice

As the son or daughter of a person suffering from addiction there are two important points you need to know.

One is that we learn by watching which means we copy or we say "not me" - I will never do that.

The other is that physically you may have inherited the addiction. In other words once you start drinking and/or taking other drugs your body may crave for more and more. Take a good look at yourself. If you have started down this road join a group with the same problem working to arrest their drug habit(s). You can do it you know you can. If you live out of town or in a place without much privacy then do it on line. A.A. or IN THE ROOMS are good places.

You also need to know that the reason there is an age drinking law and in some states now a marijuan age law is that our brains are not fully developed until (according to the University of Rochester) age 25.

The rational part of a teen's brain isn't fully developed and won't be until he or she is 25 years old or so. In fact, recent research has found that adult and teen brains work differently. Adults think with the prefrontal cortex, the brain's rational part.

 Be good to yourself.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Topic: Add your comments - go for it
Happy new year to all of you. I hope the holidays went well for you. You may want to know that the Resource Section on this web site has been updated as have the Game Section and Teen Chat section (we all need to have some fun). Lets get back to the Resource Section for a minute. Here are a list of places where you can go for help anonymously. Look it over. Trust me talking to others helps. Obviously the book has a greater and more detailed list but this is a start.  By the way For Teenagers Living with A Parent Who Abuses Alcohol/Drugs is now available as an eBook which means you can look at the info whenever you want if you have it on your cell phone or tablet. It enables you to zero in on the info you need wherever you are. You may also want to visit https://www.recoverymonth.gov/organizations-programs/answersforteenscom

Here we go again
Topic: BE GOOD TO YOURSELF

The holidays are here again. Those of you who have been following this blog for several years have heard what I am going to say before. But it needs to be said every year.

The holidays sometimes encourage alcoholics to drink more and pot users to indulge more. Parties encourage people to drink up, smoke along with everyone else and use heroine etc. You know the scene. If things get out of hand in your house know where you can go to stay. Is there a relative, a friend, a neighbor or an agency who will take you in? Always leave a note where it can be seen letting your family know where you are. If they show anger that you have gone to a safe place answer them, "I did not feel safe here. But I am your son/daughter and I love you."

Plan things you can do. Is there a Y which has programs? A movie? If you are old enough you might take a part time job during your vacation in a retail store, restaurant etc. It will keep you out of the house, your mind on other subjects and you will meet new people.

Remember you can be in charge of your life.

I have some news
Topic: Want You To Know
Have you noticed something new on our web site, www.answersforteens.com ?  The news is that the book, FOR TEENAGERS LIVING WITH A PARENT WHO ABUSES ALCOHOL/DRUGS, can now be purchased as an ebook. The advantage to that is that you can have it on your mobile. If you need a quick answer you can do a control find (ctrl F) and get to the answer quickly. I think this is important if you are upset. Where to get help quickly? What to answer a parent who is mean? Where to go if you need to get out of the house? Go for it. Help yourself and others you know.

Something new
Topic: Can't hurt to look into it
There is so much info available about addiction and only some about those living with someone who suffers from addiction. The bigee is that addiction tends to run in families. Recent studies have shown that teenagers who have an interest in activities such as sports, belonging to a church group, doing volunteer work, building models etc. - you get the idea - do not show an interest in alcohol/drugs. What do you like to do? Pick something you truly enjoy. Explore what is available in your community and go for it.

HELP OTHERS
Topic: GO FOR IT
I often think of teenagers who live far from a town or in a small town where there are not many facilities. Many teenagers don't have access to the Internet. Oh, how I wish that those youngsters could also visit this web site. If you know someone who has the same problem as you, living with someone who suffers with addiction, invite them to view your Internet. Spend time with them. Visit Alateen on line with them. Let them browse our blogs here. Help them to look up any information that will make their lives better. Go For It.

    Something to think about
Topic: It can change your life
Melinda Gates said a terrific thing which was quoted on Twitter: GOALS ARE ONLY WISHES UNLESS YOU HAVE A PLAN.
