Did You Say Boys Are Knitting? Yes, Yes
Topic: This is worth looking into

Melissa Gower-Pence, the founder of CraftCruises which includes Craft Cruises For Kids, has noticed that more boys are knitting than  ever before. And why not? Knitting has a calming effect and enables those wanting money to sell their products to stores catering to children clothes and boutiques offering hand knitted merchandise.

If you have not found a job this summer whether you are a boy or a girl you might consider learning how to knit. If you don’t know how to knit your local yarn store will help you get started. If supplies are a problem go to Needle Arts Mentoring Program  at http://www.tnna.org/page/NAMPHome  or  c/o Helping Hands Foundation, Inc. 1100-H Brandywine Blvd. Zanesville, OH 43701-7303. E-mail: HelpingHands@Offinger.com . This group will tell you what is available in your area and if need be will supply you free of charge with the necessary material. Send us photos of your new accomplishments.

You have a lot of stories to tell
Topic: Try writing

For those of you who have a desire to write you have read in the past my comments about ONE TEEN STORY.  They are a magazine for teenagers who have a story to tell. If you don't want to spend the money to subscribe ask your library to get the magazine. Read it before you write your own story. If you have a good relationship with your English teacher she/he might help you organize your story. Anyway here is the latest info from the publisher.

One Teen Story just a year old, the monthly magazine of short fiction for young people is getting a new editor-in-chief: Patrick Ryan, 47, was the associate editor of Granta from 2009 to 2013. Designed for readers 14 and up, One Teen Story publishes nine issues a year. Like its parent magazine, it doesn’t carry photographs or advertising. It’s just exactly what it says: one story per issue.

Ryan says young people are “looking for engaging reads about people whom they can identify with. It’s not about having a message or the positive spin. It always starts on a character level, and it has to have an interesting story. If you look at the ‘Twilight’ characters and the ‘Harry Potter’ characters, they feel very contemporary.”

Ryan knows what he’s talking about because he’s written for this market himself. In addition to publishing a collection of short stories for adults, he’s the author of three novels for young adults: “Saints of Augustine,” “In Mike We Trust” and “Gemini Bites.”

September is far off, but -
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Think about it

Wellness week is coming this September, but you know what - wellness should be year round. The subjects which cover wellness week are so important you need to work on them year round. Be good to yourself. Take the pledge not to take drugs or drink. Those of you who have read my book know that addiction is hereditary. Much has to do with how we metabolize alcohol and/or drugs. Think about the points listed below. They have been put together by SAMHSA. Perhaps you can help to organize some activities in your community. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch with SAMHSA at wellness@samhsa.hhs.gov

National Wellness Week 2013 Schedule:

MAYBE YES, MAYBE NO
Mood:  bright
Topic: Help Available

I received the following information on line:

Lionrock Recovery - the first ever online drug/alcohol recovery program and their innovative video conferencing platform. Here's a subject that very rarely gets the media attention it deserves (addiction), and Lionrock is really pioneering an entirely new way for people to get help. This is something that could help thousands and we could use your help spreading the word.

Lionrock Recovery (www.lionrockrecovery.com) makes getting help for alcohol and drug problems easier by combining serious addiction treatment with the privacy of online therapy delivered at a reasonable/affordable price. Lionrock is really trailblazing a new solution for those in need of help. For example, Lionrock is a more affordable and discreet option for Moms who are struggling and juggling... it is discreet, convenient, and lower-cost than traditional rehab. This way they don't have to leave the comfort of their own homes to get help.

I know that rehab/addiction is somewhat of a taboo subject, but with your help spreading the word, we can help by educating a number of people who might not have sought treatment before on a new solution that might suit their needs.

****

Investigate it but be careful.  I personally think that the personal touch, being eyeball to eyeball with other people, is very important.

Do you like science then visit www.whatif.org.

What If? is designed to excite students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students in two age categories, 14-16 and 17-18, may work alone or in groups of as many as four. They must create a research plan, write a research paper, develop and build the propulsion system, make a video showing the vehicle in action, and submit the video to judges via YouTube.com.

How to Submit your Entry: Go to www.whatif.org and then

  1. Download and completely fill out the Submission Information Form for your team. See Below

    PDF Version Word Version

Another new year
Mood:  happy
Topic: What Do You Think
Those of you who have been reading my blog know that I think that new year resolutions are really wish lists of what you wish life could be like. I say this is a good time of the year to think through what you really want to do with your life. Even better discuss it with a counselor how to achieve it. If you get a counselor who is discouraging, one who says, "I think that you should try for something else" - you know what - get another counselor. For example if you want a career in a particular field such as being an electrician, a plumber or a carpenter or a clothes designer, a coach - make a list of people who could help you. See what education you need. Go to the library if you haven't got a computer and ask a lot of questions on the search engine. Do it - don't wait.
